About the Item

Alain Le Yaouanc (1931-2012) was a French painter and printmaker associated with the abstraction movement of the mid-twentieth century. He was known for his use of vibrant colors and geometric shapes, and his works often incorporated elements of the natural world. Le Yaouanc studied at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was influenced by the work of artists such as Nicolas de Staël and Pierre Soulages. He began exhibiting his paintings in the 1950s, and his work was included in major group shows in France and abroad. In the 1960s, Le Yaouanc began experimenting with printmaking, and he became a master of the medium. He created a large number of prints, often using techniques such as lithography and etching to produce works that echoed the themes and styles of his paintings. Throughout his career, Le Yaouanc remained committed to abstraction and to exploring the possibilities of color and form. His work has been shown in many major exhibitions, including retrospectives at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rennes. This painting is a wonderful example of his work, as it features what he's best known for-- vibrant colors, and geometric shapes. This monumentally large piece has wonderful age and patina and while a half a century old, still is very current and would look incredible in any modern, mid century modern, or even post modern home. As photographed with a Paul Evans Argente Cube table and a Knoll BRNO Chair by Mies Van der Rohe. Such a striking piece!

Louis Durot Pouffesses Chair, Signed, 1990
By Louis Durot
Located in Culver City, CA
Designed and crafted by French Pop Artist, Luois Durot, this piece is sure going to be a conversation piece. Is it a tongue? Is it a bum? It's called the Pouffesses chair and it's definitely a fun piece that makes a bold statement in any room! While the chair is certainly a bold piece of functional pop art, it looks fantastic in the gallery, flanked with a Vladimir Kagan cloud sofa, and Paul Evans cube table (as photographed). We also have this piece among Olivier Mourgue, Pierre Paulin and Verner Panton pieces and not only does this piece hold its own, it makes a statement. This piece would look incredible in any modern, mid century modern, or contemporary environment. Louis Durot's pieces have sharply increased in popularity in recent years-- being currently styled by top interior designers. A quick search online will yield a treasure trove of these pieces being used in a number of absolutely stunning contemporary environments. Louis Durot, born 1939, is a French pop artist who narrowly escaped deportation in 1943 by missing the train to Auschwitz. Gathered in Magagnosque ( Alpes-Maritimes ), it is there that he discovered the pleasure of sculpting the earth and making objects from it. In 1960, he enrolled at the Faculty of Science, where he obtained a diploma in “propaedeutics – Maths 1 Mécagène”. In 1963, he became a "gluer" for two months and then an engineer at Equipiel, where he was responsible for calculations and resistance measurements to develop prototypes of nuclear power plants. When the French branch was abandoned and became a research company, Equipiel offered him a one-year training in organic chemistry. Between 1966 and 1972, Louis Durot was at the head of a dozen research contracts. In 1964, Louis Durot founded the Freelane Studio which aims to bring together artists from various disciplines with common artistic expectations. The Freelane Studio thus brought together the jazz journalist Gilles Brinon, the painter Jean Ihallero, Maxime Defert... It was thanks to them that Louis Durot met the painter François Arnal , who introduced him to the French sculptor César in 1966. Louis Durot becomes César's assistant for a year, in order to put his qualities as a chemical engineer at his service. In César's studio, he improves his knowledge of polyurethane foam and the artist's foam creations, his expansions. Thanks to César, Louis Durot met Pierre Restany (founder and mentor of the New Realists group founded in 1960), Arman and Robert Malaval...

Sculpta-Grille Bones Screen on Walnut Base by Richard Harvey, 1960s
By Richard Harvey
Located in Culver City, CA
If a space-age honeycomb and a brutalist dream had a baby, it’d be this sculptural stunner. **We ship worldwide—often for the same cost as stateside. Our rates are insane. Message for a quote** This sculptural screen is part of the legendary “Sculpta-Grille” series by architect Richard Harvey, who brought space-age swagger to Mid Century architecture with his futuristic resin forms. Originally conceived for use in commercial spaces like banks, casinos, and mod lounges, these panels were designed to divide space and steal the show. Today, surviving examples are rare—and coveted by collectors, designers, and editors alike. This particular beauty is the cleanest one we've come across: the resin is bright and crisp, and the walnut base is rich, warm, and glowing with just the right amount of vintage character. It’s photographed here in our gallery alongside a Marta Blomstedt style scalloped back chair. We currently have this paired with a Paul Evans credednza, Milo Baughman sofa, and Hans Wegner Papa bear chair and not only does this piece hold its own-- it steals the show and makes a bold mid century modern statement! Use it as a room divider, sculpture, or gallery wall anchor. It’s not just décor—it’s a conversation-stopping design artifact. And bonus: we also have a second screen available, with more patina and a softer, creamier buttery ivory tone. Display one solo for impact, or double up for a modular moment worthy of a museum. Richard Harvey’s Sculpta...

Monumental Adrian Pearsall Brutalist Wall Mounted Disc Dry Bar, 1970's
By Craft Associates, Adrian Pearsall
Located in Culver City, CA
Available right now we have this increasingly rare, mid century modern, brutalist disc bar by Adrian Pearsall for Craft Associates. This brutalist wall mounted disc cabinet is definitely a conversation piece-- stretching a whopping 48" in diameter, this disc dar opens to reveal a mirrored back as well as 2 shelf inserts. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and this entire brutalist line of furniture appears to have (pretty obviously) been inspired by American craft movement designer Paul Evans, who designed nearly identical pieces which were available through Directional Furniture to the trade in the 1960's and 1970's. While this piece doesn't have the pedigree of an original Paul Evans piece, what is does have is an abundance of over-the-top maximalist style with a much more palatable price tag. Without being mounted to the wall, this piece was a little tougher than an average piece to photograph, but for scale purposes we photographed it resting on the floor alongside a Fabricius and Kastholm grasshopper...
