About the Item
Oil on canvas, signed lower right and inscribed and signed on the reverse. Brereton was born in Derby in 1954. He received his basic art training at the Derby Joseph Wright Art School although he is a self-taught artist. He works mainly in oils and specializes in marine subjects, his favourite subjects being deep water sailing ships of the 19th century. His work has been influenced by artists such as Montague Dawson and Thomas Somerscales. His love of ships and the sea emanate from having lived by the sea on the south coast of England. His work is recorded and illustrated in Denys Brook-hart’s book “20th Century British Marine Paining”, and E.H.H. Archibald’s “Dictionary of Sea Painters of Europe and America”. He has exhibited at the Royal Society of marine artists in London and West End, as well as many galleries throughout the UK.

"Shipping Off the Coast" by Thomas Luny
By Thomas Luny
Located in Wiscasset, ME
Shipping off the coast by English artist Thomas Luny. Oil on canvas signed and dated 35' in the lower left. Nice period and possibly original frame.
Thomas Luny (1759–1837), born in Cornwall, probably at St Ewe, was an English artist and painter, mostly of seascapes and other marine-based works. At the age of eleven, Luny left Cornwall to live in London. There he became the apprentice of Francis Holman, a marine painter who would have a great and long lasting artistic influence on Luny: Luny remained until 1780 in Holman's London studio, which, was first situated in Broad Street, St. George's, and later relocated to Old Gravel Lane.
Examples of his work are exhibited at the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich, in the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter, and at The Mariners' Museum in Newport...

Located in Nantucket, MA
Seascape with Clippership by George Howell Gay (American: 1858 - 1931), circa 1890, an oil on canvas bow view of a clippership under full sail, running with stun'sls and skysails set, on lively sea under blue cloudy sky, with a second square-rigger visible in the background, signed in the lower right, and titled on the reverse "Clipper Ship Before the Wind." A beautiful and dramatic painting with a cool, brisk feel.
The painting is in fine condition, with one small patch along the upper margin and a tiny spot of corresponding inpainting.
Measures:24 in H x 20 in W
Framed: 29 in H x 25 in W
George Howell Gay was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and educated in Chicago under Paul Brown and Henry Elkins, and in 1889 moved to Bronxville, New York. He worked in all media, but was especially fond of watercolor, which allowed him to capture the transparency of the ocean and the luminous qualities of sunlight and clouds. Gay worked along the Northeastern coast from Rhode Island to Maine, but also painted summer and winter landscapes throughout New England.
Gay’s seascapes were exhibited at the Boston Art...
