Bob Stanley Smile (Pink) 1966 liquitex on canvas 60 x 70 inches Exhibited: Bianchini Gallery (label en verso) Bob Stanley (1932-1977) is a pioneer New York School pop artist of the 1960s. He made paintings based on journalistic photographs of pop bands, race cars, athletes, and pornography. He pushed images to the point of visual ambiguity, making them reference both abstraction and pop culture. In the 60s, Stanley's paintings featured a narrow palette, each one composed of just two colors whose complimentary quality was derived from the optical studies of Marcel Duchamp. That, and the fact that they are based on photographic images, gives them the feeling that they are both hand made and yet the products of a technological world. Stanley exhibited in Documenta, Kassel German, The Whitney Museum, New York, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among many other prestigious venues. He had solo exhibitons with two of the most important galleries of that time, Bianchini Gallery, NYC and Galerie Ricke, Kassel, Germany.
