About the Item

A painting that refers to Our Lady Eleusa, also known as the "Mother of God of Tenderness," which shows an undeniable feeling of affection and tenderness between mother and child. There are several variations of these, and the image presented here shows: Mary holding Jesus with their cheeks touching. Another version to keep in mind is the Glycophilusa icon, very similar to the Eleusa, only in this case the baby Jesus, still with his cheeks close together, will touch Our Lady's chin with one hand. The meaning intended to be conveyed by these images is the intimate relationship between the two figures and about the humanity of the Son. In addition, Mary's often sorrowful gaze is always highlighted, symbolizing the woman's expectation of Christ's suffering. The colors of the entire canvas refer to some typical symbolism in the iconographic tradition of Our Lady: the green dress reminiscent of the earth, purity and fertility, the red mantle a symbol of love, and the golden edges of the mantle a symbol of royalty. The stars on the Virgin's mantle symbolize virginity before, during, and after childbirth. The scroll, on the other hand, held by the infant Jesus is nothing but the Word of God. The painting measures 52x71 cm, has a coeval frame measuring 65x88 cm. It has no signature of the author. A surface cleaning has been performed.
