About the Item

This work comes from Plavcan's late 1940s-1950s period and reflects his studies abroad after receiving the Cresson Scholarship while attending the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts studying under Eugene Iverd, the noted illustrator, in 1928. His time in Europe set his course and he worked in a primarily color-saturated style, though modern, retaining the landscape aspect and technical skills learned at the fine art academy. In 1932 he started teaching at the Erie Technical High School which he continued to do until his retirement in 1970. Prolific and often noted for working in class on a painting while teaching and maintaining a home studio, the painter exhibited extensively at such places during the 1930s and 1940s as The Art Institue of Chicago, The Corcoran Biennial in Washington, D. C. and the Carnegie Internation Exhibition in Pittsburgh. As his family grew he showed less and less but continued to teach and sell. He is best known for landscapes and urban exterior scenes but did portraits as well. By the 1950s his efforts lead to more modern works and with the invention of acrylic paints, he expanded his work to show flattened perspectives but maintained depth. His most noted pupil was successful Op Artist Richard Anuszkiewicz speaks of their color sense and how they both in different ways influenced the other. Common themes throughout his career are trees and landscape elements. The painting presented shows his flattened approach with the subtle use of large areas of color set against deftly toned areas of mixed pigment. Throughout his career, he worked in oils, water colors, casine and acrylic. The largest collection of his works in a public institution is housed at the Erie Art Museum but his works are avidly collected privately.
