Oil painting: The House of Cards / Oil on Canvas painted 1843 Style: Biedermeier Size: 27.55 x 32.67 inches 70.0 x 83.0 cm (frame included) SIGNED: " Ed.Ritter 1843 " Eduard Ritter (1809 - 1853) Ritter studied at Viennese Academy of Arts in period as from 1824 until 1834, together with Danhauser, Fendi and Waldmüller. He had drawn attention by his self-portrait painted in 1830 / as from this year Ritter took part in yearly exhibitions of Viennese Academy of Arts of which he became full member in 1848. The painter specialized in creation of portraits and genre pictures. - The artist's pictures were shown in various exhibitions, for example in the monthly presentations of Austrian Art Association or in exhibitions of Kuenstlerhaus Vienna (1890, 1893, 1898 and 1924). Ritter engaged with working with watercolor, drawing ink and oil painting (he had created a few landscapes, too). The painter's style is marked by humorous and a bit naive way of portrayal. - The Austrian Gallery of Belvedere as well as the Museum of Lower Austria possess some of Ritter's works. Austrian Biographical Lexicon There are numerous family members gathered in living room of a middle-class house, having taken place around a table: A boy balancing on a chair has triumphantly raised his right arm, seizing a playing card. There is a house of cards - once constructed by the boy - visible on table: It is admired by the children as well as by the adults. The picture presented here is influenced referring to interior and build of composition by Ferdinand Georg Waldmueller's (1793 - 1865) painting "Christtagmorgen / Morning of Christmas Day" created in 1844. Since Ritter's picture "Das Kartenhaus / The House of Cards " is signed with '1843', this would be an interesting document of a possible influence of the younger artist on the older Waldmüller, who had been Ritter's colleague in Viennese Academy of Arts: Some key features of composition as well as of figure staffage are found in both pictures whereas Ritter has a different style of painting. Condition: Good there aren't any damages existing / due to age, there are some craquelures visible.
