Approx. 29 " x 53 " C I R C A 1958 This is an exquisite and eye-catching Heller abstract cityscape of New York! In the mid century period the exodus from the cities towards the suburbs created a dichotomy - cities were both revered and reviled. Up until 1950 people wanted to move into the modern cities, with the many and varied things city life provides. But in the postwar baby boom the cities developed another reputation as places where crime thrived & juvenile delinquents roamed. So cautious parents fled to the surrounding areas and raised children in the suburbs. This was perhaps the most defining moment of American culture. Even now, most Americans live in enormous suburbs removed from the cities and connected only by the automobile. So during this period, city life, and particularly New York, was romanticized by those who felt it was getting a bad rap. Cityscapes were popular subjects for Greenwich Village artists and New Yorkers proudly displayed these modern works in their apartments. The skyline with its towering skyscrapers was an accomplishment! A symbol of what the modern world was all about! The NY skyline was mute testimony to the industrial revolution and the 'modern' Western world! The cityscape became an iconic art symbol. Heller cityscapes are now coveted by collectors as one of the most vibrant and appealing of the cityscape artists. This one doesn't disappoint!
