About the Item

This painting of a bulldog features a happy dog who celebrates a 50th birthday with a cake. It’s a very decorative painting with a beautiful frame . The artist is George van van Herwaarde (1938-2011) was born in Haarlem, where he photographed the youth scene in and around club Xeno. His serious photography career began as an assistant to fashion photographer Hans Dukkers in 1957. In the 1960 group portrait of Dutch photographers for De Telegraaf by Paul Huf, he is still literally on the sidelines. After a full-page of his free work in Haarlems Dagblad in 1962, he decided to establish himself independently as a fashion, advertising and, to a lesser extent, portrait photographer. George van Herwaarde photographed fashion for De Bijenkorf and the International Fashion Centre and, until the 1970s, the couture of Frans Molenaar. He then took up painting, particularly pierrot rock on large canvases. His residual black-and-white archive includes about 7,500 fashion shots from the hip 1960s.
