A painting by Inga Uwais aka Chris Langdon (b. 1952) « Adventures of Man Love Doll #6 », oil on canvas, 2012. From the private collection of Laura Lee Stearns. A haunting tableau whose exquisite use of rich color, skewed perspective, and shadow play reinforces disturbing themes of isolation and solipsistic sexuality: we see the warm glow of the lamp - illuminating a sex toy no less - juxtaposed with the fluorescent lighting of the bathroom as the protagonist faces himself post-coitus in the mirror. The two bodies exist in different planes - different blocks of color - despite being intimately linked, suggesting the ambiguity of the subjects’ roles: is the blow-up doll real? a metaphor for an estranged lover? a young version of the man himself? Alas we are left in an eerie twilight. At once macabre and playful, this masterful painting effortlessly prances on the fine line between the comedic and the tragic.
