English School, 17th Century. A pair of portraits of William Mellish (1605-1667) and his wife, Martha (1610-1684). Inscribed respectively: Ano Domi 1639 Aetatis June 34 and N Byk fecit Ao 1637 June 4th. With later inscriptions: Wm Mellish Esq 3d Son of Edw. Mh & Alice Reason b. 31 Mh 1605. d 3 Ap. 1667 and Martha Dr. of Saml. Goldsmith W. of Wm Mellish ob. 4 Jul. 1684 aet. 74 Oil on canvas. Frame: Height: 55in. /140cm Width: 47in. / 120cm) Provenance: By descent through the Mellish family, firstly Blyth Hall, Nottinghamshire and latterly at Hodsock Priory, Nottinghamshire to Frances Katharine Mellish who married Sir Andrew Buchanan 1st Baronet (1807-1882); Thence by descent at Hodsock Priory to Sir Andrew Buchanan, 5th Baronet (b. 1937).
