About the Item

Oil on canvas depicting a verdant pastoral landscape, with two cows at the edge of a small pond in the foreground, near a path leading to a small forest in the background, which fades into the morning fog. The brushwork is precise and meticulous, close to the style of Camille Corot and the Barbizon School. Indeed, this is a very fine painting that demonstrates great technical mastery and prefigures in its style the artistic transition that occurred in the 19th century with the Impressionist movement. The painting is set off by a gilded wood frame decorated with water leaves. It is signed by the artist Eugène Capelle, who won acclaim at the Paris Salon for his 19th-century landscapes of Normandy. Eugène Capelle (1934, Rouen - 1887, Asnières sur Seine) The son of merchants, Eugène Alfred Capelle was born in Rouen on October 18, 1834. A disciple of Thomas Couture, in 1862 he exhibited a series of pastoral paintings of oxen in his native town. The following year, he took part in the Paris Salon for the first time, and lived in Mortefontaine, in the Oise region. In the early 1860s, he met the young painter and future ceramist Laurent Bouvier, who considered him his master. Capelle exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1864 to 1870, distinguishing himself with his landscapes of Normandy and his depictions of the banks of the Marne. In 1865, he settled in Chennevières-sur-Marne and entrusted the sale of his works to the Deforge & Carpentier gallery, located at 8 boulevard Montmartre in Paris. He also collaborated with Charles-Théodore Sauvageot (1826-1883) and architect Vaudremer on the frescoes for the Saint-Pierre-de-Montrouge church. He exhibited again at the Salon from 1875 to 1879, then at the Salon des artistes français from 1880 to 1882. A letter sent to Alfred Canel in 1872 hints at his desire to bequeath several of his paintings to the future Pont-Audemer museum. Today, the Alfred Canel Museum in Pont-Audemer holds four of his works. Dimensions without frame: Width 65 cm Height 46 cm
