Perez Celis' "Buenos Aires" is an abstract oil painting on paper, created in 1989, that captures the vibrant spirit and color of the Argentine capital. The piece features bold, sweeping strokes of yellow and black, interspersed with bright reds and deep blues, creating a dynamic interplay of forms and colors. Signed by the artist, this painting exemplifies Celis' signature style, which often incorporates elements of his South American heritage. The use of stark contrasts and vivid colors in this work evokes the lively culture and urban energy of Buenos Aires. The triangle and cone shapes are significant shapes that appear in Celis' work and often times were used to add a feeling of movement and composition.
Perez was born in San Telmo in on the South side of Buenos Aires, and grew up in Liniers, on the opposite end of town. Working as a newsboy during childhood, he learned the basics of drawing and painting via correspondence classes. He enrolled at the Belgrano School of Fine Arts in 1954, and first exhibited at age 17, at Galería La Fantasma. Following his entry into the professional arts world, he began using his name in a reversed form.
