About the Item
“California School” oil on canvas painting; with subject matter being "Airplanes Flying over California Hillside" signed by artist N.J. Brock and dated 1983. The talented artist has joined a group of artists who have taken part in the resurgence of that movement in the 1970’s and 80’s involving "en plein air" and on sight painting to more accurately depict the California landscapes, especially as regards lighting and fauna. Quite an imagination for Brock, the artist, as he depicts offbeat overall looking images of two low cruising personal aircraft that are flying in opposite directions, over a local hillside area. For those familiar with the terrain, they can identify with the rendition of fauna, colors, and topography closely resembling California rural areas, with it's golden hills and predominantly clustered oak trees. Note the detail of the ranch and grazing livestock in the fenced field.
The artist makes the scene come alive, as one can only imagine the surprise and noise of low flying airplanes buzzing the local animals and startling any people who might be on the ground looking up with great curiosity--not your everyday boring landscape painting. Perhaps the artist was commissioned by one of the owners of these planes.
The airplane on the left appears to be a 1965 Single Engine Piper Cherokee two seater with a 136mph cruising speed. The license number on the rear fuselage "N6643W" indicates it was registered in California (the "N" indicates United States).
The other plane is a 1968 single engine Cessna Model #172 with a 150 horsepower and a 138 mph cruising speed. The registration"N22886" indicates that it was owned by someone in the San Francisco Bay area. It is considered by many to be the most successful aircraft in history when considering reliability, longevity, and popularity.
This painting is a "must have" for anyone who is familiar with the area and also, happens to be an aeronautical aficionado.
Framed in a low profile and appropriate 1/2” black metal frame to better feature the aeronautical subject matter.

Early Twentieth Century Aviation Vintage Aircraft Airplane Framed Gouache Paintings.
Three paintings by the well known Artist and Illustrator Charles Thomas Howard they were each painted to be published as postcards, so these are the original artworks. They are in good clean condition with fresh and vibrant colours, I have framed them in handmade gold frames with a flecked cream mount. They can be purchased individually or as a set, they do look striking displayed as a group. This is the Miles Sultan aircraft.
