La scuola pittorica norditaliana sviluppò a partire dal XVI secolo una particolare predilezione per un sincero naturamortismo che indagasse con sentita vividezza e naturalistico virtuosismo quei soggetti tradizionalmente invalsi nel repertorio disegnativo; nature vive di animali apparecchiarono così, in via preferenziale, creature del sottobosco, da cortile e da pastorale. La lavorazione febbrilmente tattile della materia pittorica aveva incoraggiato una sempre maggiore predilezione all’allineamento con le tendenze allora provenienti dai paesi fiamminghi; queste caratteristiche si riscontrano nella presente coppia di nature vive con volatili, prodotte probabilmente in ambito toscano nei primi decenni del XVIII secolo.
Nel primo dei due dipinti animalier si anima una vivace scena con diversi uccelli dai piumaggi colorati. Alcuni sembrano interagire tra loro, apparendo raffigurati in volo o appollaiati tra la vegetazione scura e terrosa che fa da sfondo alla ramificata ed animata composizione. Si notano diverse specie, ognuna con le sue peculiarità cromatiche, che catturano l'occhio dell'osservatore per la loro unicità e vivacità. Il secondo dipinto presenta anch'esso un gruppo di volatili in un ambiente naturale dalle medesime caratteristiche. Qui, l'attenzione si concentra maggiormente su un singolo uccello in primo piano, con dettagli più definiti nel piumaggio, dai colori vividi e sgargianti. Gli altri uccelli sembrano muovervisi attorno, creando una dinamica interessante all'interno dell’elaborata composizione. Entrambi i dipinti condividono una palette di colori che spazia dai toni scuri della terra e del fogliame ai tocchi più vivaci dei piumaggi degli uccelli, sviluppando un contrasto che era piuttosto comune nella pittura di nature vive del Seicento e del principio del Settecento. Le figure, rese attraverso rapide pennellate, si contraddistinguono per un marcato dinamismo. La coppia di tele mostra delle marcate analogie con la produzione del bresciano Giorgio Duranti. Giorgio Duranti (Brescia, 1683 – Palazzolo sull'Oglio, 1768) fu una figura poliedrica e affascinante del Barocco lombardo, distinguendosi non solo come pittore ma anche come intellettuale e religioso. Di nobili origini bresciane, la sua vita fu caratterizzata da un'interessante combinazione di studi accademici, interessi culturali e una profonda dedizione all'arte. Duranti compì i suoi studi presso il collegio dei nobili dei gesuiti di Brescia, dove ebbe modo di coltivare un'ampia gamma di interessi. Oltre alla pittura, si dedicò allo studio delle scienze e della musica, diventando un eccellente suonatore di violoncello. Questo suo profilo colto e raffinato, unito a una vita tranquilla e arcadica trascorsa in gran parte a Palazzolo sull'Oglio, lo rende una figura rappresentativa di un certo ideale di vita intellettuale dell'epoca. Nel campo artistico, Giorgio Duranti si specializzò in particolare nelle nature morte di fiori e, soprattutto, nella pittura animalista, con una predilezione per la raffigurazione di volatili di ogni specie. Le sue opere mostrano un'acuta capacità di osservazione degli animali vivi e all'aperto, un tratto che lo avvicina agli animalisti fiamminghi e anticipa alcune tendenze successive. Molte delle sue opere raffiguranti animali sono oggi custodite a Brescia.
