About the Item

An oil painting on canvas of a wintry alpine landscape at sunset by Russian early 20th century artist Victor Emanuelov (Russian, 1884–1940). THe artist painted almost exclusively wintry alpine scenes andhe was represented in London by the Cooling Galleries (this work included). Virtually nothing else is known about the life and work of the artist. The painting is signed V. Emanuelov at the right hand lower corner of the canvas. Set in a giltwood frame. The Cooling Galleries was created by John Albert Cooling (born on March 20th 1859 in London) the son of John Cooling, restorer and art dealer. He was educated UCS London, South Kensington Schools and the Royal Academy Schools, where he was a medallist and exhibitor in 1880. He worked originally a portrait painter and restorer entering the art business in 1884, the year Emanuelov was born! The eponymous galleries were located originally at 150 Southampton Row, 47 Fleet Street and from 1911 until mid-1970s at 92 New Bond Street when it moved to 37 Albermarle Street. The gallery merged with Newman & Co to become Newman & Cooling and eventually closed in the late 1980s.
