Surrealist African American Self-Portrait by Harry Leopold D. 1943
About the Item
An African American self portrait by the surrealist painter Henry Leopold (1920-2009). Leopold studied fine art in Belgium, France and Italy. He attended the American Artists school, the Pratt Institute and Ecole Royale des Beaux Arts in Belgium. He was active in New York City as a muralist and set designer and taught art at York College (CUNY). He exhibited at the Salmagundi Club as well as other venues in New York. In later years until his death, he lived and painted in the thriving artist’s community of Rockport, Massachusetts. Dated 1943, this dramatic portrait seems to channel the artist’s fascination with his exemplar, Salvador Dali, who often portrayed himself with a devilish flair.
