Victor Isbrand, 1897–1989 Greenlandic Scene with Women Carrying Coal, Upernavik, 1935 Oil on canvas, mounted in passepartout. Signed: V. Isbrand. In the summer of 1935, Danish painter Victor Isbrand traveled to Greenland together with his wife, the artist Oda Isbrand. On June 4, they sailed aboard the vessel Hans Egede to the Upernavik district, located on the northwest coast of Greenland. They returned on September 15, bringing with them a rich collection of sketches, studies, and impressions from the Arctic landscape and daily life. This particular painting, created during or shortly after the journey, captures a moment of local women transporting coal—an everyday scene reflecting the harsh yet resilient life in Greenland at the time.
