About the Item
This large oil on canvas painting by American painter William Henry Drake (1856-1926) features a flock of sheep in a landscape following their shepherd dog. The animals are very much the centre of attention for this composition. The dog is alert and shows a wonderful protective attitude towards the sheep, allowing them to peacefully graze under his protection. This serene scene, by W. H. Drake in 1917 is signed in the lower right. The painting, featuring a cacophony of greens, reds, browns and whites, is set in an antique rectangular giltwood frame.
William Henry Drake was a painter and illustrator known for his illustrations of The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling. He studied in Paris at the Académie Julian and at the Cincinnati School of Design in Ohio. He spent a great deal of time visiting zoos, where he could indulge and develop his passion for drawing animals. This lovely dog and sheep painting from 1917 would adorn any home beautifully.
