About the Item

William Henry Margetson (British 1861-1940) Medium: Oil on Porcelain Painting size 15.75" wide x 12" high Frame size: 24" wide x 20" high Biography: William Henry Margetson was an English painter, born in Camberwell, London, in 1861, the son of Edward Margetson (a merchant). He studied at DUlwich College and in South Kensington before attending the Royal Academy, where he exhibited from 1885. He taught drawing at the Central School of Arts and Crafts. His illustrations appeared in a variety of magazines, including Black & White, Cassell’s, The English Illustrated Magazine, The Girls’ Realm, The Graphic, The Harmsworth Magazine, The Idler, The Pall Mall Magazine, The Penny Magazine, The Quiver, Sunday at Home and The Tatler. However, after the turn of the century he concentrated increasingly on figure painting and became noted for his paintings of beautiful girls, typically painted on large canvases in oils and watercolours. Margetson was elected to the Royal Society of Miniature Painters in 1896, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1901 and to the Royal Institute in 1909. Margetson, who lived at Wallingford, Berkshire, died on 2 January 1940. He was married to Helen Howard Hatton (the daughter of author Joseph Hatton and herself an artist) on 20 June 1889 at St Mark’s, St John’s Wood. The Margetson’s had at least three children, two daughters (Hester, who went on to become an illustrator, and Beryl) and a son (Oliver). Margetson was said to also be a keen sailor, dancer and gardener in his spare time.
