Il ritrattato può essere identificato con Karl Josef d'Asburgo-Lorena, figlio di Maria Teresa d'Austria e di Francesco I di Lorena. Maria Teresa ebbe ben 11 figli, 6 femmine e 5 maschi : costui era il settimo, ma il secondogenito dei maschi. Fu, perciò, in rivalità col primogenito, Giuseppe, destinato ad essere imperatore. A differenza di Giuseppe, però, era un giovinetto estroverso e di una grande intelligenza che lo fece preferire dai genitori al fratello. Venne allora nominato Arciduca d'Austria e destinato a diventare Granduca di Toscana e, forse, anche imperatore. Ma, all' età di 16 anni, nel 1761, morì di vaiolo e tutte le speranze svanirono.
In questo dipinto il nobile è presentato in giovane età: ritratto di tre quarti, sebbene poco più che bambino, l’Asburgo ha un’attitudine reale e seriosa. I colori chiari e brillanti dell’incarnato e delle vesti contrastano fortemente con lo sfondo neutro dai toni freddi.
