About the Item
Original large format studio photo of a young girl holding a jumping rope, taken between 1871-1895 by the notorious Félix Nadar, with the marks “Nadar 51 Rue D´Anjou (Hotel Privé)”. The photograph in sepia with white hues somewhat faded, the expression of the girl is one of curiosity, and her eyes stare at some point above the lens. Details of her attire and shoes are appreciated, as well as the rocks and plants in the background. “Nadar” was the pseudonym of Gaspard-Félix Tournachon (born in Paris, April 1st, 1820, died on March 20th, 1910). He was a talented and restless man involved in many different artistic, intellectual, and entrepreneurial activities. He worked as a caricaturist (1840-1850), journalist, novelist, and balloonist (he pioneered flight in Air balloons, becoming, after some experimentation and severe accidents, the first aerial photographer in history, patenting it in 1858 ). His artistic/commercial name “Nadar”, has been linked to photography and the creative exploitation of the novel médium since the middle of the 19th century. Nadar became one of the most important portrait photographers of world photography, leaving for posterity portraits of the most famous musicians, thinkers, writers, and artists of his time. He also pioneered the use of artificial lighting in photography (patented 1859), creating an original set of amazing images of the catacombs of Paris. He trained his only son, Paul (February 1856- September 1939 ) in the craft, thus inheriting both the famous commercial name and studio of his father. There is no information concerning the identity of the girl.
