Christo and Jeanne-Claude Ultrachrome Print

About the Item

Christo (1935, USA) and Jeanne-Claude (1935-2009, USA), Documenta de Kassel, 1968, Ultra-chrome print, 60 x 50 cm, N°4/12, signed by Christo, Jeanne-Claude and the photographer Wolfang Volz. On the occasion of the Documenta IV in 1968, in Kassel, Germany, Christo and Jeanne-Claude created the largest ever inflated structure without a skeleton. After three unsuccessful at-tempts, it was erected on August 3th, 1968, with the assistance of five cranes, two of which were 230 feet (70 meters) high and weighed 200 tons each. The pair of giant cranes, the tallest Europe had to offer, had been operating separately in Northern France in Hamburg, Germany. It took two weeks just to make arrangements for both cranes to arrive simultaneously in Kassel, to elevate the inflated air package from its horizontal position on the ground to its vertical position. The 7 ton air package consisted of an envelope made 21,528 square feet of Trevor fabric coated with PVC and tied with ropes. Air pressure was maintained by a centrifugal blower run by a variable-speed electric motor. A gasoline generator stood by in case of power failure. All expenses of the project were born by Christo and Jeanne-Claude through the sale of original drawings, collages and early works of the fifties and sixties. The land was restored to its original condition.

Albert Chubac, Composition, Spray Paint and Stencils, circa 1960, France
By Albert Chubac

Albert Chubac (1925-20008), Composition, Spray paint and stencils, Workshop stamp lower right, Framed, circa 1960, France. Measures : Width 50 cm, Height 65 cm. Albert Chubac was born in Geneva in 1920. After studying decorative art, then at the Beaux-Arts in Geneva, he obtained grants to travel to Italy, Algeria, Spain, Egypt and Greece, stages which will mark his work. He settled in 1964 on the Côte d ‘Azur in Aspremont in a very Spartan house, attracted by the light, the sun and the colors of nature. The year 1967 is the year of the establishment of the School of Nice. He will work and exhibit alongside Aman, César, Tinguely, Gilli, Ben, Rayse, etc ... In 1990, it was the consecration with the opening of MAMAC in Nice. Albert Chubac then becomes accessible to the general public. He will use solid primary colors, will develop modifiable structures and then develop the collages in three dimensions. Gradually, he broke away from his classical training and figuration to move towards abstraction through the encounters and influences of contemporary artists. Always in search of simplicity, He will radically limit the plastic means with a reduced palette, geometric shapes and simple gestures to concentrate on minimum conditions of possibility. His work, which lies between constructivism and geometric abstraction, is playful and imbued with the artist's joie de vivre. In 2004, following the major retrospective at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nice, he donated around one hundred works to the City of Nice. Albert Chubac died in 2008 in Tourrette-Levens, near Aspremont. Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Wrapped Trees. Basel 1997–1998. Signed Book & Print
By TASCHEN, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Wolfgang Volz
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Fondation Beyeler and Berower Park, Riehen, Basel, Switzerland, 1997-1998 In Autumn 1998, after the trees around Fondation Beyeler and in the Berower Park had shed their leaves, Christo and Jeanne-Claude wrapped 162 trees—some up to 25 meters high—with 55,000 square meters of polyester fabric and 23 kilometers of rope. The effect of light and weather on the translucent material created a kind of amorphous sculptural choreography, an ever-changing variety of shapes, surfaces, and colors. The fabric, used every winter in Japan to protect trees from frost and heavy snow, lent the trees the appearance of precious and fragile objects. The Fondation Beyeler project was a pièce de résistance for Christo and Jeanne-Claude, and an extension and expansion of many years of interest in the concept of wrapped trees...
