Carved Antique American Double Picture Frame Depicting US Navy Crest
Located in Dallas, TX
Hand-carved in the United States in the early 20th century, the focal point of this double picture frame is the stylized naval insignia. Both glass frames, which fit 6 x 4 photos, currently contain a pair of near antique black and white postcards (they are included). The frame on the left has a print of a circa 1930 George Harris photograph of the USS Constitution, aka “Old Ironsides”. The frame on the right has a lithograph of a full rigged windjammer (commercial sailing boat) that was originally printed in the early 1900’s. The two frames are positioned splayed outward so that the bottom of the frames meet in one point. Both frames are adorned with leaves and rectangular borders with diapered background. The outside bottom corners are each conical volute scrolls with fluted embellishments. At the top of the frames, a large eagle is presented displayed, wings elevated (wings spread wide with the tips pointing upward). The eagle is perched upon a shaped shield with stars and stripes, in the style of an early American flag...

1864 Oxford University Boat Race Team Photograph, Oxford Cambridge
Located in Oxfordshire, GB
864 Oxford University Boat Race Team Photograph. This is the most wonderful memento of the 1864 Oxford and Cambridge University boat race. The traditional crew photo is framed in original oak frame and mounted on the official photographers mount 'Hills & Saunders'. The mount with arched window cut-out with gold edge, calligraphic legend, Oxford college crest with the names and weights of the crew. On the rear is the Hills & Saunders paper trade label. Oxford, Univ: Crew 1864 Bow. C. Roberts. Trin. 10.9. 2. W. Awdry Ball. 11.4. 3. F.H. Kelly. Univ. 11.9. 4. J. Parsons. Trin. 12.9. 5. W.B. Jacobson. Ch.Ch. 12.3. 6. A.E. Seymour. Univ. 11.3. 7. M. Brown. Trin. 11.3 Str. D. Pocklington. B.N.C. 11.5. Cox. C.W.R. Tottenham. Ch.Ch. 7.3. This was the 21st boat race between the crews from Oxford and Cambridge Universities. It took place on the River Thames on 14th March 1864. Oxford won by nine lengths in a time of 21 minutes 4 seconds, the fastest winning time since the event was held on The Championship Course in 1845. Taken from Wikipedia. The Boat Race is a side-by-side rowing competition between the University of Oxford (sometimes referred to as the 'Dark Blues') and the University of Cambridge (sometimes referred to as the 'Light Blues'). The race was first held in 1829, and since 1845 has taken place on the 4.2-mile (6.8 km) Championship Course on the River Thames in Southwest London. The rivalry is a major point of honour between the two universities and followed throughout the United Kingdom and world-wide. Oxford went into the race as reigning champions, having won the 1863 race by ten lengths, with the overall record tied on ten victories each. The location of the start of the race was moved to approximately 400 feet (122 m) upstream of Putney Bridge in order to reduce interruptions to the race from steamers. Indeed, both boat club presidents had issued a caution to the steamer captains, indicating that the race would be conducted on the ebb tide should any interruption take place which would risk the steamers becoming grounded at Mortlake. The finish was moved the corresponding distance upstream to maintain the traditional length of the race. Oxford rowed in the same boat as the previous race, which was constructed by J. and S. Salter while Cambridge utilised a new vessel built for them by Taylor of Newcastle. Oxford were coached by George Morrison...
