Albert Brenet
Albert Brenet, who recently celebrated his hundredth birthday, is surely the last of the true adventurers, having spent his life sailing the oceans of the world as the French Navy's official artist. He was born in Harfleur, near Le Havre, in 1903, and 'at home, the talk was always about the wind, the sea, and the ships'. Then there were the three-masters with their exotically perfumed cargoes of spices and coffee. The turning point in his life came when he first caught sight of the Bonchamp, one of the last three-masters to ply the seas, built at the turn of the century. As the crew was two men short, Albert gained a place on board and spent the next seven months sailing 'as they did in Colbert's day' - no electricity and just two buckets of freshwater per man per week. In between manning the rigging, he captured every instant of life on board, even in the roughest of seas. From that moment on, Albert painted and drew everything that moved, from the firemen of Los Angeles to the feria in Seville, and, of course, a whole armada of ships. He became one of the Navy's official painters in 1936. Albert thrilled to the sights of the Orient - the mosques of Iran, the souks of Tunisia - and was endlessly fascinated by the quality and continuity of Japanese civilization. Now enjoying a peaceful and well-deserved retirement south of Paris, Albert is the only artist ever to have been granted specialties in all three services - Army, Navy, and Air Force. Three exhibitions are being staged to mark Albert Brenet's hundredth birthday - in Perros-Guirec (Côtes-d'Armor), Le Havre, and Paris, at the Musée de la Marine. Original Vintage boating poster for the Paris boat show dating from 1950 by Roger Chapelet.
Roger Chapelet - September 25th 1931 - June 30th 1995) was a French marine painter and poster artist.
Roger Chapelet’s career as a maritime painter began when he boarded the Rollon in 1927 and painted a series of paintings of different European ports: Le Havre, Antwerp, Rotterdam. Later he embarked on sailboats and painted the fishing campaigns off the banks of Newfoundland and Greenland.
In the 1930s, he became the poster artist for the main French maritime companies and in 1936 was appointed Peintre de la Marine (Official Painter to the Navy) and was a member of the Académie de Marine (see below).
The ocean liner companies included: Compagnie de Navigation Mixte, Paquet, Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, and Fraissinet.
Along with Marin-Marie and Albert Brenet, Roger Chapelet is considered one of the three great French marine painters of the 20th century. An exhibition was dedicated to him at the National Maritime Museum from October 8, 1993 to December 5, 1994.
Académie de Marine
The title of Official Painter to the Navy (POM) is granted by the French Minister of Defense to artists who have devoted their talent to the sea, to the National Navy and to seafarers. It can be awarded not only to painters but also to photographers, filmmakers, illustrators, engravers, and sculptors. The Academy of Marine Painters exists since 1830 and it’s members can put an anchor after their signature.
This poster is for the 16th International Nautical Show which was held Cours Albert 1er in between the Pont des Invalides and the Pont de l’Alma in Paris from the 30th September to 15 October 1950.
