About the Item

Original French film poster for William Wyler's 1940 Film Noir starring Bette Davis, Herbert Marshall and James Stephenson. The screenplay by Howard E. Koch is based on the 1927 play of the same name by W. Somerset Maugham. This classic film noir was nominated for seven Oscars. Bette Davis's gave a brilliant performance and was nominated for Best Actress, which she lost out to Ginger Rogers in Kitty Foyle. The director William Wyler was also nominated for an Oscar, which went to John Ford for The Grapes of Wrath. This was certainly a very tough year. This film was also up for the Best Picture of the year, and missed out to Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca. The wonderful artwork on this poster is the renowned French poster artist Boris Grinsson. He brilliantly captures the sinister Bette Davis, gun in hand, with the Silhouette of Geoff Hammond's widow looking in the background. This is undoubtedly the best looking poster on this classic 1940 film noir. Due to World War II this film was not release in France until 1947, this poster is from the films first French release. It is conservation linen baked and it would be shipped rolled in a very strong tube and sent by Federal Express

Repaired: This piece is in excellent condition, with the colour remaining very bright with minor restoration to folds. This is standard as this piece was distributed folded. The surface dots in the top left portion of the poster are in the printing.
