Original Antique War Recruitment Poster Teufel Hunden US Marines WWI Devil Dog

About the Item

Original antique World War One recruitment poster for the US Marine Corps (founded 1775) - Teufel Hunden German Nickname For U.S. Marines Devil Dog Recruiting Station - featuring artwork by Charles Buckles Falls (1874-1960) depicting a bulldog wearing a United States Marine Corps helmet chasing a dachshund dog wearing a German military helmet with the bold text above and recruiting office information below (in this poster, at Smithfield & Water Streets). The nickname of Devil Dog for a US Marine is said to have originated from the German soldiers calling the Marines "Teufel Hunden" in 1918 after the fierce Battle of Belleau Wood; this has not been confirmed and another theory is that the term was given by American news reporters. Good condition, restored paper loss in top right corner, restored tears through image, restored folds, restored creasing, minor staining, foxing, backed on linen.
