EDUARDO CHILLIDA (San Sebastian, 1924-2002). Eduardo Chillida is undoubtedly one of the most important Spanish artists and one of the sculptors who most marked the national artistic school. During his long and fruitful career, he worked and experimented with multiple materials, creating sculptural forms recognizable at first sight. In 1943 he studied architecture, which he abandoned three years later to draw at the Circulo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. At this time he made his first pieces of sculpture. He lived for a few years in France, first in Paris and later in Villaines-sus-bois in the South. In 1951 he returned to the Basque Country for good. He worked the sculpture in small and large format with almost all materials: wood, plaster, terracotta, porcelain, alabaster, granite, concrete, steel, iron, bronze, etc. However, it would be unfair to limit Chillida's artistic activity solely to sculpture, given that his graphic work occupies a no less important place in his creative biography and always goes hand in hand with his sculptural work. Drawing was the artist's first “praxis”, but it was much later, in the mid-50s, when he began to be interested in engraving. Although his preferred technique was etching, Chillida also worked with xylography, lithography, aquatint, drypoint and even serigraphy, practically always playing only with two colors: black and white.
