About the Item

Vintage official reproduction of a poster designed for London Transport - The Imperial War Museum Underground to London North or Elephant & Castle - featuring colourful illustrations of historic items on display inside the shape of the museum including a bi-plane and tanks, guns and other weapons, a military helmet and uniform on a stand, an RSM navy anchor shield badge, a World War One Totenkopf skull and crossbones on a pennant flag, a Zeppelin / blimp airship and a warship in camouflage colours, a Nazi Swastika* on a black Iron Cross and a Parteiadler Nazi Germany eagle emblem (National Socialist German Workers' Party / Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei) with the date 1939 (the start of World War Two), the text with the London Underground roundel below - The Imperial War Museum displays in profusion devices for the slaughter of one's fellow men. But less obviously it is also a remarkable gallery of modern art - Epstein, Augustus John, Paul Nash, Nevinson, Bone, Rothenstein, Sargent, Spencer, Piper, Willliam Roberts, Laura Knight, Sutherland and many others, are all finely represented. A case, if ever there was one, of good from evil. The Imperial War Museum (IWM) was founded in 1917; the IWM London headquarters / Southwark branch opened on Lambeth Road in 1936; the museum's other branches are IWM Duxford, IWM North, HMS Belfast and the Churchill War Rooms. Good condition, creasing, tears, minor staining. *Note: the 1935-1945 flag of Germany featuring the swastika has been covered in the image but appears as originally printed on the poster itself.)

"Join the Army at Once & Help to Stop an Air Raid" Vintage British WWI Poster
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
"Join the Army at Once & Help to Stop an Air Raid" Vintage British WWI Poster, 1915 This vintage British recruitment poster, published in 1915, calls on men to join the Army. In full, the text reads, “It is far better to face the bullets than to be killed at home by a bomb / Join the Army at once & help stop an air raid / God save the king.” On the poster, a silhouette of London lies beneath a spotlighted German Zeppelin looming above. This recruitment poster is displayed in a custom-built archival frame. WWI was the first time British civilians were in the direct line of fire in the modern era, creating the idea of the "homefront.’" Traditionally concerned with its coastal borders, Britain was highly unprepared for a sudden and prolonged German air raid. Throughout 1915 and 1916, successive German Zeppelin attacks ravaged several cities, but most notably London. These attacks continued until 1918, but newer aircrafts were used. The Germans hoped to enrage the British people so that they would demand their government made peace. However, their plan backfired when the United Kingdom cried for German defeat...
