About the Item

17th–18th Century Ceiling Decoration – Rococo and Baroque Panel Motifs, Plate LXXXII This refined and intricate chromolithograph, Plate LXXXII from L'Ornement Polychrome, displays a suite of ornamental ceiling panels from the transitional period between the 17th and 18th centuries in France. Merging elements of late Baroque with the emerging Rococo style, this composition offers a highly decorative view into elite interior design spanning the reign of Louis XIV through Louis XV. The plate is composed of a unified yet varied pattern of vaults, fan-shaped panels, and curved corner motifs, suggesting the domed or arched ceilings of salons, galleries, or private boudoirs. The colors—dominated by shades of soft blue, teal, and green with accents of red, yellow, and ivory—are both harmonious and complex, reflecting the delicate balance between structure and ornament that defined the Rococo aesthetic. Each section features botanical motifs such as stylized acanthus leaves, floral garlands, curling vines, and geometric latticework. The floral elements, both symmetric and asymmetric, dance across the surfaces in winding arabesques. Scrolls and medallions punctuate the design with refined grace, while the repeating border patterns lend a sense of continuity and classical rhythm. This chromolithograph was produced around 1869 by lithographers Dufour and Mourgues, and printed by Firmin-Didot in Paris. It formed part of Auguste Racinet’s highly influential series documenting decorative styles from across the globe and various historical epochs. His work became a cornerstone for artists, architects, and designers during the 19th-century historicist revival. This particular print provides invaluable visual reference for decorative painters, interior designers, and historians studying the transition from the structured grandeur of Baroque to the lighter, more playful Rococo aesthetic. Condition: Excellent. The image area is clean with vivid color retention and no foxing. Slight marginal toning, consistent with age. No tears or repairs. Printed on strong, stable paper with full margins. Framing tips: A delicate gold or ivory frame paired with a soft pastel mat (light blue, sage, or pale gray) will echo the elegance of the design and enhance the ornamental detail. Suitable for classical or French-style interiors. Technique: Chromolithograph Maker: Dufour & Mourgues after Racinet, Paris, c.1869
