About the Item
17th Century Baroque Ornament Print – Rich Gold and Green Decorative Motif
This antique chromolithograph from Plate LXXV of L'Ornement Polychrome captures the elaborate aesthetic of 17th-century European ornamentation in the height of the Baroque period. Featuring a symmetrical floral and acanthus leaf design in rich hues of gold, green, and burgundy on a pale celadon background, this print exemplifies the grandeur and complexity of decorative arts during the reigns of Louis XIII and Louis XIV.
The central composition consists of lavish arabesques, stylized palmettes, curling foliage, and shell motifs, all woven into a mirrored pattern that evokes the richness of textile design, gilded woodwork, or wallpaper panels from palatial interiors. Above and below, complementary frieze sections reinforce the overall opulence with scrolling motifs and central rosettes, likely derived from decorative ceiling or border elements used in aristocratic or ecclesiastical settings.
Lithographed by Sanier and printed by Firmin-Didot Frères of Paris around 1869, this chromolithograph is part of a celebrated portfolio compiled by Auguste Racinet. Racinet’s monumental work documented the history of ornamental styles from antiquity to the 18th century, offering a valuable reference for artists, decorators, and scholars. This particular plate is a vivid testament to the opulent and theatrical sensibilities that defined Baroque design across Europe, especially in France and Italy.
The print was created using chromolithography, a 19th-century technique that allowed for brilliant multi-color reproduction. Its fine detailing and bold palette make it not only a collector's item but also a statement piece suitable for historical interiors or design inspiration.
Condition: Very good condition overall. Minor age toning to margins. No visible foxing, tears, or repairs. The colors are rich and well preserved, and the paper remains strong.
Framing tips: This work will pair beautifully with an ornate gold frame to reflect its Baroque origin. Use a dark green or deep burgundy mat to echo the interior tones, or opt for a light cream mount to enhance contrast and visual clarity.
