17th Century Engraving of the Royal City of Arakan (Burma) by Arnoldus Montanus
About the Item
Lovely detailled engraving of the old city of Arakan in Myanmar, in good condition. This illustration is from "De Oost-Indische Voyagie van Wouter Schouten", published by Jacob Meurs, Amsterdam. Coenraet Decker was the artist behind this intricate and historically significant work.
This engraving titled "De Conincklycke Hoffstadt Arrakan" (The Royal Capital of Arakan) depicts a panoramic view of the historic city of Mrauk U (also known as Arrakan), which was the capital of the Arakanese Kingdom (now part of Myanmar) from the 15th to the 18th century. The scene showcases the grandeur of the city's royal palaces, temples, and pagodas, nestled within a lush and mountainous landscape. The engraving provides a detailed representation of the city’s fortifications and the surrounding countryside, including palm trees, various buildings, and possibly traders or military figures in the foreground, which reflects the city's significance as a prosperous and fortified capital during its peak.
The perspective of the engraving allows the viewer to appreciate the architectural complexity of Mrauk U, including its religious and royal buildings perched on hilltops, surrounded by the natural beauty of the region. The presence of animals and figures in the foreground adds a sense of daily life and activity within the city.
This engraving was produced by Arnoldus Montanus (1625–1683), a Dutch writer, historian, and engraver known for his detailed works on the geography, culture, and history of distant lands. Montanus was particularly interested in the East Indies and Japan, and his engravings often accompanied travel accounts or historical descriptions intended for European audiences. His work provided one of the earliest visual depictions of these faraway places, making them accessible to those in Europe who were curious about the expanding world.
