About the Item
17th Century French Cartouches – Ornamental Baroque Frames, Plate LXXVII
This richly colored chromolithograph from the 19th-century decorative arts series *L'Ornement Polychrome* presents a stunning collection of Baroque cartouches and ornamental frames, originally designed during the 17th century in France. Plate LXXVII showcases an array of elaborately styled cartouches, once used to frame inscriptions, coats of arms, or decorative motifs in architecture, furniture, and graphic design during the reign of Louis XIV.
Each cartouche in this print is distinct in shape and embellishment, unified by a flamboyant Baroque aesthetic. Scrolling acanthus leaves, volutes, garlands, masks, and putti dominate the composition, all rendered in a palette of vivid reds, blues, greens, and golds on a powder-blue ground. The designs range from regal and symmetrical ovals to fantastical asymmetrical frames, some featuring small busts or architectural flourishes.
At the center of the composition is an oval cartouche with a crowned medallion and winged face, surrounded by curling gold foliage—an archetype of high Baroque taste. Other highlights include richly gilt frames with festoons, grotesques, heraldic devices, and scrollwork ideal for ornamental engraving or interior boiseries.
This plate was chromolithographed by G. Sancer and printed by Firmin-Didot et Cie in Paris around 1869, as part of Auguste Racinet's influential work compiling historical ornament across cultures and centuries. Racinet’s chromolithographs brought historical decorative arts into the 19th-century design vocabulary and influenced both academic study and applied arts.
These Baroque cartouche designs are not only visually dazzling but also historically valuable, serving as reference points for heraldic, architectural, and decorative studies.
Condition: Excellent condition. Clean image area with strong, vibrant colors and sharp impressions. Minor age-related toning around outer margins. No tears or repairs. Paper is thick and stable.
Framing tips: This richly ornamental print will pair well with a gold-leaf or rococo-style frame. A wide off-white or pale blue mount will highlight the soft background tones and allow the intricate frames to shine. Suitable for eclectic, classical, or historical interiors.
