About the Item

18th Century Decorative Fan and Ornament Designs – French Rococo Details, Plate XCVI This highly detailed chromolithograph, Plate XCVI from *L'Ornement Polychrome*, presents an exquisite collection of 18th-century French decorative arts, showcasing the opulence and intricate craftsmanship of the Rococo period. Central to the composition is a beautifully painted fan, framed by ornate medallions, wall panel details, and reliefs—each a testament to the artistry and elegance of Louis XV and Louis XVI decorative traditions. The centerpiece, a fan with a half-circle leaf and ivory sticks, is a masterwork of ornamental storytelling. Its painted scene depicts a harbor or maritime event, likely allegorical, surrounded by swirling floral scrolls, mythological figures, cherubs, and fantastical creatures rendered in rich, flowing Rococo style. The high level of detail, from the gilded arabesques to the animated central narrative, reflects the period’s fascination with both leisure and luxury. Around the fan are assorted architectural and decorative motifs: – Oval medallions featuring a neoclassical urn, a portrait of a gentleman in wig, and ancient-style cameos. – Rectilinear friezes and ceiling rosettes with acanthus scrolls, lion heads, and floral borders. – Gold-on-red paneling and molding pieces with figural sculptures and reliefs of mythological scenes. – A vertical section of wall trim ornamented with flowers and a carved putto. These components represent elements from furniture, ceiling panels, wall decorations, and luxury objects of the 18th century, designed for aristocratic interiors and high society salons. Their stylistic richness was often executed by guild artisans and ornamentalists whose work flourished during the Ancien Régime. Drawn and lithographed by F. Durin and printed by Firmin-Didot in Paris around 1869, this plate belongs to Racinet’s celebrated *L'Ornement Polychrome*. It continues to be a valuable source of historical reference and aesthetic inspiration. Condition: Excellent. Strong, clean impression with vivid color on thick cream paper. Minimal margin toning; no foxing, tears, or repairs. Plate edges intact with full border visible. Framing tips: Best presented in a gold leaf or antique wood frame with a dark green or burgundy mat to highlight the deep background and gilded elements. A striking addition to neoclassical or eclectic interiors. Technique: Chromolithograph Maker: F. Durin after Racinet, Paris, c.1869
