Provenance:
While exploring a private estate sale in the Cotswolds, I encountered a collection of botanical engravings that immediately caught my attention. Among them were two exquisite 19th-century prints by John Curtis, renowned for his detailed illustrations in Curtis's Botanical Magazine. These particular pieces, dated 1833 and 1835, featured vibrant depictions of plants accompanied by meticulously rendered insects—a hallmark of Curtis's work.
The estate, once owned by a family with a deep appreciation for natural history, had preserved these engravings in remarkable condition. The colours remained vivid, and the intricate details were as sharp as when first printed. Recognising their significance, I acquired the pair, understanding that such well-preserved examples of Curtis's work are increasingly rare.
John Curtis (1791–1862) was a prominent British entomologist and illustrator, best known for his contributions to Curtis's Botanical Magazine, where he combined scientific accuracy with artistic beauty. His engravings often showcased the interplay between flora and fauna, capturing the essence of 19th-century British natural history. These prints not only serve as decorative pieces but also as historical documents reflecting the era's fascination with the natural world.
For collectors and interior designers alike, these engravings offer a unique blend of art and science. Their timeless appeal makes them suitable for various settings, from classic libraries to modern living spaces. Owning such pieces connects one to a rich tradition of botanical illustration and the enduring legacy of John Curtis.

These rare British botanical prints date back to 1833 and 1835, beautifully numbered 447, 464, 471, and 550, and are in remarkably fresh, vibrant condition.
Renowned botanical artist John Curtis (1791-1862), who became the principal illustrator of the Botanical Magazine in 1818, created these decorative botanical prints with exquisite detail and hand-coloured precision.
