19th-Century Hand-Coloured Lithograph of Medieval Gauntlets and Arm Defenses

About the Item

19th-Century Hand-Coloured Lithograph of Medieval Gauntlets and Arm Defenses This finely detailed hand-coloured lithograph showcases a variety of medieval gauntlets and arm defenses, highlighting the craftsmanship and functional design of European plate armor. Taken from the 1842 publication *Der Rittersaal: Eine Geschichte des Ritterthums*, authored by Friedrich Martin von Reibisch and Dr. Franz Kottenkamp, this plate serves as an exceptional visual study of knightly hand and forearm protection. The illustration features five distinct examples: 1. Top left: A decorated pair of articulated gauntlets with scalloped red trim, combining protective steel plating with ornamental design for ceremonial or tournament use. 2. Top right: A streamlined armored forearm and gauntlet, designed for practicality in combat, with overlapping steel plates for maximum flexibility. 3. Bottom row: Three additional pairs of gauntlets exhibiting variations in style and detailing. The central pair shows rounded knuckle guards and segmented wrist protection, while the other two pairs feature gilded accents and flared cuffs, suggesting their use in higher-status or ceremonial contexts. The artist captures the fine detail of these gauntlets, from the carefully articulated finger joints to the subtle curvature of the polished steel. The hand-colouring adds a vibrant touch to the red and gold embellishments, showcasing their artistry and function. Condition: This lithograph is in excellent condition, with clean margins, vivid hand-colouring, and minimal foxing, consistent with its age. This rare print is an exceptional addition for collectors of medieval armor, European military history, or fine lithographic art. Its combination of historical accuracy and artistic execution makes it ideal for display in studies, libraries, or curated galleries focusing on arms, armor, and chivalry.
