19th-Century Hand-Coloured Print of Armed Horsemen Bearing a Heraldic Banner

About the Item

19th-Century Hand-Coloured Print of Armed Horsemen Bearing a Heraldic Banner This original hand-coloured lithograph, produced in 1842, provides a captivating glimpse into the martial traditions and heraldic symbolism of European chivalry. It is taken from the esteemed publication *Der Rittersaal: Eine Geschichte des Ritterthums*, published by Carl Hoffmann in Stuttgart. Friedrich Martin von Reibisch served as the artistic director, while Dr. Franz Kottenkamp contributed scholarly commentary, ensuring that each image accurately represented the customs, attire, and martial practices of the medieval and early Renaissance periods. In this scene, two mounted warriors face off in what appears to be a stylized encounter. The horseman on the left, clad in chainmail and armed with a spear, carries a vibrant banner featuring a black eagle—a motif often associated with imperial or noble heraldry. His shield and red-lined surcoat add rich color contrasts, emphasizing his status and identity. Opposite him, the other rider, similarly armed and protected, wields a sword raised high and carries a shield of his own. Both horses are rendered with meticulous attention to anatomy and shading, their bridles and saddles reflecting the precision of 19th-century lithographic craftsmanship. The hand-applied coloring remains remarkably crisp, and while light age-toning and faint creases are present, they do not detract from the scene’s clarity or impact. These subtle signs of authenticity confirm its historical origins and add to its allure. Collectors of medieval imagery, heraldic art, or military history will find this print an engaging addition to their collections—an artifact that conjures the honor, symbolism, and martial pageantry of a bygone era.
