About the Item

19th-Century Lithograph of a Lioness, Her Cubs, and Their Caretaker This unique 19th-century lithograph depicts an unusual yet tender interaction between a lioness, her young cubs, and their human caretaker (De Leeuwin met hare jongen en oppasser). Originally published in 'De Zoogdieren: afgebeeld en in hunne levenswijze geschetst', this illustration offers a rare glimpse into human-animal relationships in the 19th century, possibly reflecting the training or taming of lions in menageries or early zoological collections. The Barbary lioness (Panthera leo leo), once native to North Africa’s Atlas Mountains, was a highly prized species in European royal courts and menageries. Unlike their sub-Saharan relatives, Barbary lions were adapted to cooler climates, with distinctive thick fur and a more muscular build. The scene in this lithograph suggests a setting where lions were raised in captivity, possibly in a circus or private collection. Lion taming was a growing spectacle in the 19th century, with handlers forming close bonds with their animals. Created by C.C. G. Zool. and printed by La Haye & J. L. G. V., this lithograph is a valuable piece for collectors of antique zoological prints, wildlife illustrations, and historical studies on early captive animal management. Keywords: 19th Century, Lithograph, Natural History, Zoology, Lioness, Lion Cubs, Animal Trainer, Panthera Leo, Barbary Lion, Menagerie, Scientific Illustration, Antique Print, Animal Engraving, Wildlife Art, Taxonomy, Netherlands, La Haye, J.L.G.V. --- Condition: The print is in good condition, with minor age-related toning and some light foxing along the margins. The lithographic details remain crisp, capturing the lifelike expressions of the lioness, cubs, and their caretaker. The edges show slight irregularities from historical binding, but there are no significant tears or folds. The artwork remains well-preserved and highly collectible. --- Framing Tips: To highlight this lithograph’s historical and artistic value, use an acid-free mat in a neutral shade, such as off-white or beige. A dark wooden or black frame will enhance the contrast and provide an elegant display. UV-protective glass is recommended to prevent fading over time. If displayed with other wildlife or historical lithographs, consider using matching frames for a refined and cohesive presentation.
