19th-Century Lithograph of the Striped, Spotted, and Brown Hyenas in Detail

About the Item

19th-Century Lithograph of the Striped, Spotted, and Brown Hyenas in Detail This striking 19th-century lithograph presents three species of hyenas: the beautifully marked hyena (De fraai geteekende hyaena), the spotted hyena (De gevlekte hyaena), and a depiction of the striped hyena. Originally published in *De Zoogdieren: afgebeeld en in hunne levenswijze geschetst*, this illustration captures the unique anatomical and behavioral traits of these scavenging carnivores with scientific accuracy and artistic skill. The striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena), found in North and East Africa, the Middle East, and India, is known for its solitary nature and strikingly marked fur. The spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta), native to sub-Saharan Africa, is the most social of hyena species, living in large clans and known for its powerful bite and intelligence. The brown hyena (Parahyaena brunnea), found in southern Africa, has a shaggier coat and is more reclusive, often scavenging along coastlines and arid landscapes. Created by C.C. G. Zool. and printed by La Haye & J. L. G. V., this lithograph is an excellent addition for collectors of antique zoological prints, African wildlife illustrations, and historical natural history studies. Keywords: 19th Century, Lithograph, Natural History, Zoology, Spotted Hyena, Striped Hyena, Brown Hyena, African Wildlife, Scientific Illustration, Antique Print, Animal Engraving, Wildlife Art, Taxonomy, Netherlands, La Haye, J.L.G.V. --- Condition Summary: The print is in good condition, with mild age-related toning and slight foxing visible along the margins. The lithographic details remain sharp, preserving the intricate fur textures and anatomical accuracy of the hyenas. Some minor irregularities along the edges due to past binding are present, but no major tears or folds. The print remains a well-preserved and highly collectible piece. --- Framing Tips: To highlight this lithograph’s fine details, use an acid-free mat in a light neutral shade to complement the paper’s natural aging. A dark wooden or black frame will enhance the contrast, emphasizing the fine shading. UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve the artwork’s integrity. If displayed with other zoological lithographs, consider using matching frames for a cohesive and refined collection.
