About the Item

African Wildlife and Hunting Scene – Antique German Engraving, c.1840 Description: This striking antique engraving titled “Afrika” depicts a vivid tripartite composition portraying African wildlife and traditional hunting scenes. At the top are three finely engraved and partially hand-colored animals: a red river hog (Potamochoerus porcus) on the left, a zebra in the centre, and an African wild dog or painted wolf (Lycaon pictus) on the right with a guinea fowl as prey. Their rich earth tones and attentive anatomical rendering reflect the European fascination with African fauna during the 19th century. The middle register illustrates an intense zebra hunt on horseback, with riders in turbans and flowing robes pursuing herds across a savannah landscape dotted with acacia trees and distant mountain ranges. Below, in the bottom register, an African archer takes aim with his bow towards a group of grazing antelope or hartebeest, while on the right a mounted hunter with a spear charges at a warthog, highlighting the drama and dynamism associated with big game hunting imagery of this period. Published by Carl Mayer’s Kunst Anstalt in Nuremberg around 1840, this engraving combines documentary natural history with romanticised ethnographic illustration typical of German and Central European educational atlases and encyclopaedic works. It offers valuable insight into historical European perceptions of African wildlife, peoples, and landscapes before photography. Condition report: Good condition with minor age toning and foxing primarily at margins, small corner crease lower left, and faint plate impression visible. The partial original hand-coloring remains strong and decorative. Framing tip: For best display, frame this engraving in a dark wood or mahogany moulding with a wide ivory or natural linen mount to enhance its warm tones and period aesthetic. Alternatively, a black frame with a gold slip will create a refined, gallery-style presentation, ideal for libraries, studies, or travel-inspired interiors.
