About the Item

Anna Maria Schuurmans – Dutch Scholar and Artist, 19th-Century Hand-Colored Lithograph This 19th-century hand-colored lithograph portrays Anna Maria van Schurman, one of the most remarkable intellectual women of the Dutch Golden Age. Born in 1607, she was a scholar, poet, linguist, calligrapher, and accomplished painter. She was fluent in multiple languages and corresponded with major philosophers and scientists of her time. Van Schurman was the first female university student in the Netherlands and a prominent advocate for women's education. In this elegant composition, she is shown standing beside a table with a quill and papers, symbolizing her scholarly achievements. Bookshelves and an artist’s easel in the background reflect her intellectual and artistic pursuits. She wears a richly detailed gown with a ruff collar and elaborate jewelry, embodying the refinement and depth of her character. The lithograph was drawn by Herman ten Kate and printed by P W van de Weijer in Utrecht. The soft hand-coloring and fine detailing bring dignity and warmth to the image, making this an important and rare tribute to a pioneering woman in European history.
