About the Item
Antique 1845 Hand-Colored Print of a Medieval Woman in Pink and Gold Cape
This elegant hand-colored engraving from 1845 depicts a medieval woman standing in profile, dressed in a flowing rose-pink gown with a rich golden-brown cape and a fitted burgundy headdress. Her posture, with open arms and uplifted face, suggests a moment of speech, presentation, or prayer. The figure’s dignified stance and refined garments evoke the grace and symbolism of noble or ecclesiastical courtly life around the early 15th century.
The print bears the inscription “MCCCC. No 3” beneath the image, placing the costume style in the period circa 1400. The figure is depicted on a neutral stage-like base, drawing the viewer’s attention solely to the costume and posture. Delicate detailing in the fabric folds and drapery reveals the technical care given to both the original drawing and the 19th-century engraving process.
Produced in France as part of a broader series on medieval costume, this print reflects the 19th-century fascination with the Gothic past. Works like this were widely used during the Gothic Revival era to illustrate the history of fashion, art, and ritual, and often served as references for artists, historians, and designers.
Condition:
Very good condition overall. The hand-coloring is vivid and well-preserved. Minor age-toning and scattered foxing in the wide margins, with no damage or distractions in the image itself. A clean and crisp impression with full plate mark.
Framing tip:
This graceful figure pairs well with others from the same series. Ideal in a simple gold, dark walnut, or black frame with a soft ivory mat. For preservation, use UV-filtering glass to protect the coloring and paper.
