About the Item

Antique Chromolithograph of Coastal Cameroon with Boats and Settlement, ca. 1890 This vivid chromolithograph titled “Kamerun” (Cameroon) was produced around 1890 and offers a picturesque view of a coastal settlement in the former German colony of Kamerun, located on the Gulf of Guinea in Central Africa. Rendered with the rich color layering typical of the chromolithographic printing technique, this image is both a decorative artwork and a historical artifact reflecting colonial perceptions of African landscapes during the late 19th century. The scene shows a tranquil harbor at sunset, with lush tropical vegetation, thatched and wooden houses, and colonial-style buildings nestled along the shoreline. The settlement is lively, with numerous figures walking, swimming, and working along the coast. Several boats—both European-style and local craft—float in the foreground, including one large barge-like vessel with a roofed cabin and smaller rowboats and sailboats, evoking a bustling trading post or mission settlement. In the background, dense vegetation and palm trees rise behind the buildings, while the orange-pink sky glows with the light of the setting sun. This combination of tropical scenery and active harbor life exemplifies how European publications of the time romanticized and documented their colonial territories for educational or propagandistic purposes. This print is of interest to collectors of African colonial history, ethnographic illustration, or antique views of the Atlantic coast. It offers insight into the architectural and commercial character of Cameroon during German rule, which lasted from 1884 until the end of World War I. Condition Report: Good condition. The colors remain vibrant and well-saturated. Minor age toning or foxing may be visible near the margins. A faint vertical centerfold is present, common in prints originally bound in large volumes. No tears or repairs noted. Framing Tips: To enhance the tropical and maritime tones, consider a dark wood frame—such as teak or mahogany—with a light cream or sky-blue mat. This color combination draws out both the vibrant sky and the calm green of the water. Use museum glass to preserve the print’s color and protect from UV damage. Ideal for display in coastal homes, studies, libraries, or interiors that feature historical travel or colonial-era themes.
