About the Item

Antique Engraving – Het Meisjes Weeshuis (The Girls’ Orphanage), Amsterdam, c.1760s This finely detailed antique engraving shows the courtyard of the Meisjes Weeshuis (Girls’ Orphanage) in Amsterdam, one of the city’s most important charitable institutions of the 17th and 18th centuries. The perspective looks into the expansive courtyard, paved in a geometric diamond pattern, and framed by imposing façades. On the left, a richly ornamented stepped-gable entrance building exhibits elaborate architectural decoration, including pilasters, scrollwork, and a central cartouche. The arcaded ground floor shelters the entranceway, with women and children gathered beneath. The right and rear wings of the orphanage are executed in a more restrained classical style, with evenly spaced sash windows and dormers along the roofline. Numerous young girls, dressed uniformly, are depicted walking, playing, or gathered in small groups, suggesting daily life within the institution. The atmosphere is both orderly and communal, reflecting the discipline and moral instruction that were central to orphanage life at the time. This engraving was likely produced for a mid-18th-century topographical book or city atlas, when depictions of Amsterdam’s civic and charitable buildings were popular among both residents and visitors. The Meisjes Weeshuis was founded in 1578 and occupied this complex until the early 19th century, making images like this valuable records of its historic architecture. Printed from a copperplate, the work demonstrates the precision and linear clarity typical of Dutch engraving of the period. The fine line work allows for detailed rendering of both architectural features and the patterned courtyard, while subtle hatching conveys depth and shadow. Condition summary: Good for age. Clean impression with only minor age toning. Slight handling marks at edges. Mounted on strong paper. Framing tips: A simple black or dark walnut frame with an off-white mount will highlight the engraving’s architectural precision. For a period look, a gilt-edged mount could complement the 18th-century style. Technique: Copperplate engraving Maker: Unknown, Dutch, c.1760s
