About the Item

Antique Engraving – African Wildlife with Giraffe, Antelopes, Camels, and Pyramids, c.1855 This detailed mid-19th-century engraving depicts an exotic scene set against the iconic backdrop of the Egyptian pyramids. In the foreground, a tall giraffe stands gracefully beside two smaller antelopes, while two camels — one standing and one resting — occupy the right side of the composition. Additional herds of camels, palm trees, and figures in traditional dress populate the middle ground, evoking a sense of bustling desert life. Towering palm and banana trees frame the scene on either side, adding lush tropical vegetation to the otherwise arid landscape. The work is both a zoological and topographical study, blending accurate depictions of African fauna with a romanticized view of the Egyptian setting. Such engravings were popular in the mid-19th century, when public fascination with exploration, natural history, and distant cultures was at its peak. This plate most likely originates from an edition of the Iconographic Encyclopaedia of Science, Literature, and Art by Johann Georg Heck, published circa 1855. The encyclopaedia was renowned for its finely engraved illustrations covering a vast range of subjects, produced to both educate and visually captivate. Engraved by Henry Winkles, a skilled 19th-century British engraver known for his precise line work and ability to render both architectural and natural subjects with clarity and depth. The engraving technique used here — steel engraving — allowed for the high level of detail evident in the textures of the animals’ coats, the foliage, and the distant architectural forms. Condition summary: Good for age. Clean impression with sharp detail. Light age toning to margins, faint handling marks, and minimal foxing. Plate mark visible. Framing tips: This piece would be well-suited to a dark wood or black frame with a light cream mount to highlight the detailed line work. For a more period-appropriate presentation, a gilt-edged mount would complement the Victorian-era aesthetic. Technique: Steel engraving Engraver: Henry Winkles (1801–1860) Publisher: Likely from Iconographic Encyclopaedia of Science, Literature, and Art by J. G. Heck, c.1855
