About the Item

Medieval Church Ceremony with Clergy and Choirboys, Richly Detailed Engraving Description: This vivid hand-colored engraving from the 1845 publication 'Costumes Historiques des XIIIe, XIVe et XVe Siècles' presents a rare and detailed glimpse into a high ceremonial event within a medieval church. Plate No. 4 of the fifteenth-century series shows an ecclesiastical scene unfolding at the altar, likely a bishop’s ordination or confirmation ritual. The setting is rendered with architectural and decorative precision, offering an invaluable visual record of liturgical customs, garments, and sacred furnishings of the period. Central to the composition is the bishop, seated and adorned in a magnificent blue cope with intricate gold embroidery. His mitre, crozier, and gloves indicate his high ecclesiastical rank. Surrounding him are clergy and choirboys engaged in various ceremonial roles—kneeling, reading, and assisting. Four youthful acolytes or clerics kneel in reverence, wearing long robes in lavender, red, and pale blue. To the right, two richly dressed canons or bishops stand as witnesses, while a deacon holds a gospel book and another assistant presents a mitre or crown. The church interior is equally impressive. The altar is richly draped in an embroidered frontal, flanked by ornate candlesticks and a detailed reredos featuring sculptural depictions of Christ and saints. A decorative lectern stands prominently at the front, displaying an illuminated missal. Behind the altar, stained glass windows and Gothic tracery add architectural realism. A charming detail lies in the lower left corner, where a small dog dozes on the altar carpet—a quiet touch of humanity amid the solemnity. Condition Report: The print is in very good condition with strong, fresh colors and excellent contrast. The paper is lightly aged with only minor foxing near the edges. The image area remains crisp and unmarred, showing no creases or tears. Margins are wide and intact. Framing Tips: This print deserves a setting that echoes the richness of its subject. Consider a dark wood or gold-leaf frame with a fine linen mat in ivory or parchment tone. A double mat may add elegance while protecting the edges. Use museum-grade UV-protective glazing to ensure preservation of the bright hand-coloring and intricate detailing. This work would be particularly striking in a grouping of other ecclesiastical or ceremonial costume prints.

Medieval Matrimony: A Union in the Gothic Halls, Hand-Colored in 1847
Located in Langweer, NL
This print from "Costume Di Moyen Age" (Costumes of the Middle Ages) published in Paris in 1847, depicts a scene from the medieval era. The image features a group of individuals in an indoor setting, likely a part of a noble class, given the richness of their attire and the elegant interior. A central figure in a blue cape with a red lining is in a dialogue or exchange with a person wearing a green and yellow patterned garment. They both are in the foreground and appear to be the primary subjects of this interaction. Behind them, there are other individuals who seem to be part of the scene, including a person in red robes who is possibly a clergyman, given the context and attire, which resembles ecclesiastical clothing. The background is adorned with Gothic architectural elements such as pointed arches and intricate detailing. Statues or figures are set within the architectural framework, suggesting a church or a similarly important building. The use of bright, primary colors is notable, and the attention to the detail in the clothing suggests a significant event, possibly a ceremony like a marriage, as indicated by the word "Casamiento" (meaning marriage in Spanish) at the bottom of the print. Overall, the print is rich in historical clothing...
