About the Item

Title: Antique Hand-Colored Engraving of The Black Lark by Eleazar Albin, circa 1730 Description: This elegant antique hand-colored engraving depicts The Black Lark, drawn and engraved by Eleazar Albin around 1730. The print shows the bird standing on a grassy mound against a plain background, highlighting its slender legs, long claws, and dark plumage with subtle brown and chestnut tones. The engraving is titled The black Lark with Albin’s signature E. Albin Delin. along the bottom border, confirming its origin in his influential ornithological publications. Eleazar Albin was a pioneering English natural history illustrator known for his series A Natural History of Birds, one of the first English works to combine detailed scientific description with colored engravings drawn directly from life. His prints were admired for their accuracy, clarity, and aesthetic appeal, serving both educational and decorative purposes among scholars and wealthy patrons in the Enlightenment era. The Black Lark (Melanocorypha yeltoniensis) is native to the steppes of Russia and Central Asia and was of great interest to 18th-century naturalists due to its rarity and distinctive coloration. Albin’s depiction captures the bird’s poised stance and alert expression with fine linear engraving and soft hand coloring that enhances the plumage textures. Condition report: The print is in good condition with even age toning typical for its age. There is light handling wear in the margins and a small crease lower left not affecting the image. The hand coloring remains strong and the engraving lines are crisp with no tears or repairs visible. Framing tips: This print will display beautifully in a dark wood or black frame with a gold inner edge to reflect its period style. Pair it with a cream or light moss green mat to enhance the natural tones of the illustration, creating an elegant presentation ideal for a library, study, or ornithological collection wall display.
