About the Item

Title: Antique Hand-Colored Engraving of The Great Black and White Gull by Eleazar Albin, 1735 Description: This impressive antique hand-colored engraving depicts The Great Black and White Gull, titled Larus ingens marinus Clusii, drawn and engraved by Eleazar Albin and dated September 5, 1735. The illustration presents the gull in profile, standing firmly on a grassy cliff edge overlooking the sea, with its strong orange beak and pale eye accentuating its commanding presence. The engraving is captioned along the bottom with its English and Latin names and bears the artist’s inscription Eleazar Albin Del. Sep. 5. 1735. Eleazar Albin was a pioneering English natural history illustrator whose works, including A Natural History of Birds, were among the first to depict birds directly from life in England. His publications combined scientific accuracy with elegant hand coloring, making them essential references for early naturalists and collectors in the Enlightenment period. The gull shown here is likely the Great Black-backed Gull (Larus marinus), the largest gull species in the world, found widely along North Atlantic coasts. Albin’s depiction captures its robust build, dark grey to black wings, and detailed feather textures, illustrating both its aesthetic beauty and natural dominance within its environment. Such engravings were not only scientific records but also decorative artworks for the libraries and studies of educated patrons. Condition report: The print is in good condition with light age toning and minor foxing spots, mainly in the margins. The hand coloring remains strong and the engraved lines are crisp. One small tear touching the left border. Framing tips: This engraving will display beautifully in a classic black or dark wood frame with a gold inner edge to reflect its historical gravitas. Pair with a cream or soft grey mat to enhance the natural tones and ensure an elegant presentation, ideal for libraries, studies, or natural history-themed gallery walls focusing on seabirds and marine life.
