About the Item

Antique Hand-Colored Print of Turkish Costumes Plate XII, circa 1800 This elegant antique print, titled Trachten XII, Costumes XII, Garments XII, Vestimenti XII, presents four finely detailed hand-colored engravings of traditional Turkish costumes, likely dating to around 1800. The plate is part of an extensive series depicting the costumes of various nations, intended for European audiences eager to learn about the cultural diversity of the Ottoman Empire and surrounding regions. The upper section features two male figures. On the left is a dignified Ottoman official or merchant wearing a tall blue turban, a green robe with floral decoration at the edges, and red shoes, standing with an authoritative yet calm posture. To the right is a warrior or guard dressed in a conical felt cap, loose striped trousers, and a long tunic, holding a club and round wooden shield, evoking the attire of rural guards or traditional soldiers. The lower section displays two female figures. On the left is a woman carrying a traditional musical instrument and a jug, dressed in a blue overcoat, patterned trousers, and yellow slippers, with a long veil draped over her hair. On the right is a young woman holding a rose, wearing a rich red coat over blue trousers with gold embroidery and a white turban adorned with a gem, reflecting refined urban fashion. Such prints were popular in Europe for their ethnographic appeal, often included in costume books or travel accounts documenting cultures encountered by diplomats, merchants, and explorers. The meticulous hand coloring brings life to each costume, enhancing its documentary and decorative value. The multilingual title in German, French, English, and Italian indicates its wide European circulation. Condition report: The print is in very good condition for its age, with only minor scattered foxing and faint age toning visible primarily in the margins. The colors remain vivid and clear. There are no tears or repairs. Framing tips: This costume plate will present beautifully in a simple gold or black frame to emphasize its refined details. A cream or very light pastel mat will enhance the soft tones of the hand coloring while providing an elegant historical presentation suitable for a study, library, or hallway display.
