This original handcolored copperplate engraving features various breeds of domestic goats, emphasizing their unique physical traits and adaptations for different environments. The plate is from Friedrich Johann Bertuch’s *Bilderbuch für Kinder* (Picture Book for Children), a 12-volume natural history encyclopedia published between 1790 and 1830, celebrated for its artistic and educational contributions.
The engraving includes:
1. An Alpine ibex (*Capra ibex*), with long, curved horns (Fig. 1).
2. A robust, brown domestic goat with distinctive horns (Fig. 2).
3. A piebald goat, characterized by its two-toned black and white fur (Fig. 3).
4. A curly-haired Angora goat (*Capra aegagrus hircus*), noted for its luxurious wool (Fig. 4).
5. Another variety of Angora goat, with finely textured wool (Fig. 5).
6. A long-haired cashmere goat (*Capra hircus*), prized for its soft undercoat (Fig. 6).
7. A smaller goat breed, potentially a pygmy or early dwarf goat variety (Fig. 7).
