About the Item

Antique Handcolored Engraving of Domestic Goats, Quadruped XXVI, c.1800 This original handcolored copperplate engraving features various breeds of domestic goats, emphasizing their unique physical traits and adaptations for different environments. The plate is from Friedrich Johann Bertuch’s *Bilderbuch für Kinder* (Picture Book for Children), a 12-volume natural history encyclopedia published between 1790 and 1830, celebrated for its artistic and educational contributions. The engraving includes: 1. An Alpine ibex (*Capra ibex*), with long, curved horns (Fig. 1). 2. A robust, brown domestic goat with distinctive horns (Fig. 2). 3. A piebald goat, characterized by its two-toned black and white fur (Fig. 3). 4. A curly-haired Angora goat (*Capra aegagrus hircus*), noted for its luxurious wool (Fig. 4). 5. Another variety of Angora goat, with finely textured wool (Fig. 5). 6. A long-haired cashmere goat (*Capra hircus*), prized for its soft undercoat (Fig. 6). 7. A smaller goat breed, potentially a pygmy or early dwarf goat variety (Fig. 7). 8. A muscular, compact goat, possibly bred for milk or meat (Fig. 8). This detailed and colorful engraving is ideal for collectors of natural history illustrations, antique prints, or enthusiasts of livestock history. Condition Report: Good condition. Hand Colored Antique Print of a Goat and Angora Goat
Located in Langweer, NL
Original antique print of a goat and Angora goat (or Ankara). This engraved print originates from a very rare unknown Dutch work. The plates are similar to the plates in the famous German work: ‘Bilderbuch fur Kinder' by F.J. Bertuch, published 1790-1830 in Weimar. This could be Dutch edition of this work (no references found), or a work that used the Bertuch plates. Published circa 1820. The engraving shows two caprine animals, commonly known as members of the goat family. They are labeled "Viverr. Dieren VIII" (Dutch 'viervoetige dieren, meaning quadrupeds) and "Quadrup. VIII", which suggests they are part of the eighth set in a series on quadrupeds. 1. **Top Illustration**: This image shows an animal with the distinctive thick, shaggy coat...
