About the Item

Antique Handcolored Engraving of Exotic Deer and Antelopes, Quadruped LV, c.1800 This original handcolored copperplate engraving depicts various species of exotic deer and antelopes, highlighting their unique physical characteristics, antlers, and coat patterns. The plate originates from Friedrich Johann Bertuch’s *Bilderbuch für Kinder* (Picture Book for Children), a celebrated 12-volume natural history encyclopedia published between 1790 and 1830, renowned for its educational and artistic contributions. The engraving includes: 1. A reclining deer, possibly a white-tailed deer (*Odocoileus virginianus*), showcasing its resting posture (Fig. 1). 2. A chital or spotted deer (*Axis axis*), distinguished by its spotted coat and slender frame (Fig. 2). 3. A hog deer (*Axis porcinus*), with shorter legs and a stocky build (Fig. 3). 4. A duiker (*Cephalophinae*), known for its compact size and short, pointed horns (Fig. 4). 5. A roe deer (*Capreolus capreolus*), with its short antlers and characteristic facial markings (Fig. 5). 6. A red deer (*Cervus elaphus*), displaying its reddish-brown coat (Fig. 6). This detailed and vibrant engraving offers a fascinating glimpse into the diversity of cervids and antelopes, making it a valuable addition to collections of natural history art, antique prints, or zoological illustrations.
